Spears

Enough of so-called 'news' about Britney Spears. That K-Fed seems like a better choice for custodial parent says it all, yes? And OJ belongs in a psychiatric ward for the criminally insane a glass at your breakfast table, not in the news. Much better to hear about Michael "Gordon Gekko" Douglas returning to his nasty screen self in "Money Never Sleeps" (due for release in 2009).

July tornadoes

Photos of the tornado and the aftermath at datalib.library.ualberta.ca/tornado from July 31 1987

Photos and story of the tornado known as Jesse Imeson at America's Most Wanted from July 2007.

There are at least two reasons men deliberately shave their heads when there is no medical reason for being bald. One, to reduce the amount of body hair labs can use for testing. Labs use hair to test for things like DNA and the use of illegal substances. Two, because the men think all the cool kids are doing it. Hands up, all those who believe reason one or reason two indicate a healthy outlook on life

Oh, and the vehicle stolen from the murdered couple could be heading to Alberta. Or to the States. Watch for a 2006 GMC Sierra that might still have Ontario plates JK8 334. The driver may be a whack job so just call the cops if you see the truck. For the love of gord, don't get into a road rage incident with the vehicle.

Gord Bless the Defence

“Mr. Wills, 50, surrendered to police in June, 2002, and the body of Ms. Mariani was found in a plastic garbage container in the basement of his Richmond Hill home. A baseball bat and other items were also inside the container. Her skull was fractured and a skipping rope had been wrapped around her throat three times. The defence maintains that Ms. Mariani died falling down stairs.” See here for more details.

Seriously, is this the best his defence lawyers can come up with?

The Inmates Have Privileges

Tickets for the Blue Jays range from $20 to $90. Add to that the cost of transportation to and from the Whitby Mental Health Centre, and some snacks -- and perhaps some cool Blue Jays merchandise. What's the cost?

The price of safety for young girls in Toronto and Durham.

A 31-year-old inmate of the Whitby Mental Health Centre wandered off while two staff supervisors were with three other patients at a Blue Jays game. The inmate is in the Centre after being found not criminally responsible for sex attacks on a five-year-old and an eight-year-old (both girls) at a playground, in 2002. He's banned from having contact with anyone under 14.

"He is, however, eligible to participate in community outings, such as the sporting event." CTV.ca     WHY is he eligible for this?

There are lots of folks who take medication to stay mentally healthy. That isn't the same as someone who, by reason of his mental health, will not take medication because he likes being mentally unhealthy. It also isn't the same as someone whose mental health cannot be controlled by existing medications.

When you can't/won't stop being a criminal, you lose the right to be in normal society.

Unless you live in a country where people are more enlightened. In that place, your rights (as a normal and law-abiding person) are worthless. worth less than the criminal's rights.

If I still lived in the GTA, I'd be asking some very pointed questions about the use and abuse of my health care dollars. I'd be asking how the courts can take my money to make me less safe.

To all my friends in the GTA: how safe do you feel today?

Not So Newsworthy

Spend a moment to reflect on the lives of six Canadians killed (and many others wounded) by a roadside bomb in Kandahar.

Those of us who were close enough to hear the sirens in Edmonton have learned Stephanie Butler's brother-in-law is the prime suspect in her murder, as well as the attempted murder of a 61-year-old cab driver (who, it seems, drove the 'alleged' killer within a couple of doors of the murder site).
This is all very strange: Ken, the brother-in-law, apparently lived with the Butlers (possibly in Saskatchewan) until such time as he tried to burn their house down. On Wednesday, cops arrested him for causing trouble at their home again. Ken, who was also wanted on outstanding warrants, was released on $300 bail. Oh, and he was ordered to stay away from the Butlers' house.
Yeah, that worked real well.
So, at some point after Ken is charged and released, his brother Mike leaves town -- heads to Red Deer for a basketball game, by some accounts.
Friday night, police are called to a scene where a cabby has been brutally beaten. A police dog follows the scent around the Butler's house and right back to a police car, where there's some dude sitting in the back seat. You got it, Ken Butler let himself into a police car and waited for the cops to discover him. Now, the police have followed the dog around the Butler's house. This is the same house Ken was "ordered to stay away from." Later, Mike can't reach his wife on the phone, so he calls his parents to check in on his wife. His wife, who was left alone in the same house that Ken was "ordered to stay away from." When Mike's folks get there, they find Stephanie, dead. The house indicates a struggle -- some say the house was ransacked -- and it seems the intruder broke into the home through a basement window. This might be the same basement he set on fire, I don't know. Mike said the justice system failed his family. This same family tried, for years, to keep Ken off drugs like meth. By now, you know -- or ought to know -- that drugs like meth are more important to the addict than life itself, so it takes more than a few visits to AADAC (and more than a couple of check-ins at a treatment centre) to get clean, if in fact the addict wants to get clean. Some don't. That's a sad fact, and a fact nevertheless.
Can anyone explain to me how someone can have a meth-addicted relative and not know how the relative works?
Now, can you tell me why a meth addict would sit in the back seat of a cop car, waiting to be arrested? And yes, cops are looking into why officers at the scene did not check the very house they walked around.
And the point of a restraining order would be, what?
When they've lost control ...
two words: Ice flow Edmonton Sun

The Globe and Mail reports each doctor visit "should include a measure of waist circumference in addition to a weigh-in."
Men: If your waistline is more than 37 inches (94 cm), you're in trouble.
Women: If your waistline is more than 32 inches (92 cm), you're in trouble.
If you're one of those people whose doctor has to "guestimate" your weight because your weight exceeds the limits of the doctor's scale, I don't think it really matters where your fat is stored. Oh, and if you're not going to change what you eat, drink or do to get healthier, odd are: you are not going to get healthier. Of course, that's just my opinion.

Here's a shocker: Fall Out Boy's Pete Wentz might be somewhat gay. This would be important, why? Sorry, not even worth linking to -- search for yourself if you're that interested.

Filed under "Oh Please": Quoting a man who coached an amateur wrestler who "had been seeking anger management treatment and was in the final weeks of his probation for public intoxication." Coach said "People are wanting to understand why a young man, only with a slight build, who was obviously intoxicated would be athreat to police." Maybe because the cops were responding to a domestic dispute call? Maybe because the guy was intoxicated? So sorry the guy was in special ed and bleeding hearts want cops to be psychic or maybe spend hours researching each individual who may or may not be in the home at the time of a domestic dispute to ensure they know exactly who they're dealing with. So sorry the guy was killed. So sorry the killing baffles his friends.
These are the same friends who sat at the kitchen table and let the alcoholic drink, right?
These are the same friends who drank with the alcoholic developmentally challenged young man with anger problems, right?
If more details emerge, if we learn that there was a devious plot to kill Michael Foster, I may change my opinion. Until then, "Oh Please."

Wanna "B" My Friend?

Yes, I am old (older than dirt, according to some) and therefore old fashioned in my ways.

If you want me to befriend you on Messenger, you stand a better chance if:
a) Your id and display name do not include "gurl" or "boi" or any variation that contains one or more repetitions of any of those letters
b) Your id, display name and interests do not indicate you have lost your mind
c) You do not type like a teenybopper
d) Your age, if shown, is over 19 and less than double digits

Examples, for clarification:
a) "Gurl" and "boi" (and "gurrrrl" and "boiiiii" etc.). Learn to spell, stupid
b) "High all the time", "bdsm", "swinger", "unemployed for life." You need help, and I am not qualified to provide that
   "Rescued genius". Probably not
"Keg", "Beer", "King". Get a life
c) "iLuv2", "CuSoon" and "OIC". Use the space bar, stupid
"Weekend was great, I met some of J's friends, they like emo too, things seem to be ok…can't get enough of J…gotta get to walmart today, but what the hey, is all good". Learn punctuation, stupid
"MMMM, LUV J (hahaha) LOL MMM GOOD (hahaha)". For the love of gord
d) A 14 year old who does not share my DNA has nothing in common with me.
A 255 year old should be writing to Guinness Records, not to me.

InJustice We Trust

I blame the metric system for messing up jail sentences in Canada.

Marvin Charlton Green is 28 year old. He is reported to have a lengthy criminal record. Apparently, he was recently paroled from a 50-year sentence for bank robbery. Now, he is wanted for the murder of a 26-year-old man in Toronto.

A 50-year sentence for bank robbery. Paroled by the age of 28. You do the math. I can't.

Only in Canaduh, eh?

Once Again

Canadians know what is really important.

That's why no one is allowed to print the real name of the 12-year-old who was stabbed more than 70 times in the basement of his family's east Toronto home in Nov. 2003. Canadians need to protect the identity of the boy's 19-year-old brother, who was found guilty of murdering the boy known as "Johnathan." Canadians know the privacy of this 19-year-old killer, previously charged with threatening the lives of students involving a bomb threat at a local school, is more important than the public's right to safety and security. After all, the murderer was only, what, 15 at the time of the school bomb threat, and 16 when he murdered his own brother -- and attempted to murder his stepfather.

Canadians have a history of respecting the rights of the individual murderer over the rights of the general public -- especially when the killer savagely murders a family member. Consider one Karla Homolka.

Canadians are rewarded for their generosity of spirit by being asked to pay for the shortest possible prison sentences. No "life means life" prison terms in Canada, no siree. Canadian politicians respect the hard-working taxpayer and show that respect by getting dangerous criminals out of prison in less time than it takes for the justice system to get them into prison.

This young murderer undoubtedly lived an incredibly painful and torturous 15 years before his first charge of unacceptably dangerous behaviour. How many times was he left alone in tremendous heat for more than 24 hours when he was not old enough to look after himself? How often was he starved, beaten and locked in a room with no windows, no bathroom and no human contact? How many times did he fight off the advances of older, stronger soldiers intent on recruiting him as a child slave-soldier in Uganda? Really, how often can a child endure rape and torture while watching career criminals murder his parents before that child fights back?

Perhaps his life was far worse. Maybe his parents spanked him once or twice. Perhaps one of his teachers used red ink to mark an assignment. Even worse, maybe that teacher circled an error on the assignment, resulting in less than 100 per cent for the murderer's final mark. Did his parents fail to buy him an iPod? Did they send him to school in jeans that were only copies of, and not actual, designer jeans? Did they commit the ultimate sin by forcing him to wear a pair of shoes large enough that he would be able to 'grow into them'?

Poor dear. Subjected to a life of less-than-acceptable means, forced to endure a society lacking in sufficient humour to laugh off a typical teen "bomb threat" prank, driven to such rage that he had to stab his brother over 70 times before he calmed down enough to attempt murdering his stepfather -- once again, the victim is victimized and the justice system is showing insufficient care and concern for his well being and personal development.

Let's get together and have a group hug during which we shall sent positive thoughts to the judge in this case, that Johnathan's murderous brother receive all of the loving care and patient nurturing so obviously missing in his life.
